Carl W. Ernst is W.R. Kerian Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of several books an Islam, including How to Read the Qur'an: A New Guide, with Select Translations, Eternal Garden: Mysticism, History and Politics at a South Asian Sufi Center, Sufi Martyrs of Love: The Chishti Order in South Asia and Beyond (co-authored with Bruce B.
