नज़ीर अकबराबादी साहब उर्दू में नज़्म लिखने वाले पहले कवि माने जाते हैं. समाज की हर छोटी-बड़ी ख़ूबी नज़ीर साहब के यहां कविता में तब्दील हो गई. पूरी एक पीढ़ी के तथाकथित साहित्यालोचकों ने नज़ीर साहब को आम जनता की शायरी करने के कारण उपेक्षित किया - ककड़ी, जलेबी और तिल के लड्डू जैसी तुच्छ वस्तुओं पर लिखी गई कविताओं को ये सज्जन कविता मानने से इन्कार करते रहे. वे उनमें सब्लाइम एलीमेन्ट जैसी कोई चीज़ तलाशते रहे जबकि यह मौला शख़्स सब्लिमिटी की सारी हदें कब की पार चुका था. बाद में नज़ीर साहब के जीनियस को पहचाना गया और आज वे उर्दू साहित्य के शिखर पर विराजमान चन्द नामों के साथ बाइज़्ज़त गिने जाते हैं.
